Objective 43 & 44: Respiratory Anatomy and Histology

Nose: has an internal and external portion, outer is supported by bones and cartilage; the inner is divided by  the midline nasal septum.  It's job is to warm, filter, and moisten the air. It is home to the smell receptors.
In the Nasal Cavity the nasal conchae look like the shelves of the nasal cavity; the Nasal Meatuses look like the little canals between the shelves.

Pharynx:connects nasal cavity to larynx and the oral cavity to the esophagus. It has 3 parts: Nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. It's job is to be the road for food and air.

Larynx: Connects pharynx to trachea. It's job  is to prevent food from going down the respiratory tract. It is home to the true vocal cords.

True and False Vocal Cords

The way I remember the different parts of the larynx: it looks like one of those party mask on a stick, i'm not sure what they are called, like the mascarade faces.
1. The hyoid bone looks like the forehead
2.The thyroid cartilage looks like the eyes
3. The Adam's Apple looks like the nose
4.The cricoid cartilage looks like the mouth
5. The tracheal cartilages looks like the stick that the face sits on

Trachea: Comes from the larynx then splits off into two bronchi. It is a fexible tube like structure that lies just infront on the esophogus. It has incomplete rings of cartilage that help form it's structure. These incomplete rings are important when we are swallowing our food because it the rings were complete then every time we sallowed we would feel our food just bumping it's way down to our stomach.

The traches is linned with cilia-looks like a fuzzy rug- its job is to help filterout the air that we breathe
The traches is composed of 3 different layers-1.Mucosa 2.Submucosa 3.Hyaline Cartilage
The Mucosa has two parts this is the part with the cilia it is the inner most layer, the Submucosa is the part beneath the Mucosa (sub=below)-makes sense, the Hyaline Cartilage is the outer most layer providing the support for the trachea. It's hard for me to tell the difference under the microscope because to me everything under the microscope looks the same, however in the pictures, the mucosa looks like a purple run way with a little fuzz on one side of it. The Submucosa looks like a purple river with small darker purple dots floating in it. The Hyaline Cartilage looks like a light purple stretched piece of saran wrap with fewer purple dot scattered about across it.

Bronchi: Run from the trachea into the aveoli of the lungs. We have two each in our bodies. their job is to warm, clean, and moisten the air that enters our body.

Lungs: We have two lungs in our bodies, the right side of our bodies have 3 lobes and the left side has 2 lobes. The lungs are home to aveoli which is where gas exchange occurs in our bodies. They are made of a fibrous connective tissue that allows  for recoil of the lungs to occur during breathing.

The Aveoli look like stems with clusters of grapes. When cut open the Aveoli look like bee hives.

This is a picture from the book Allen lets us borrow. It relates the parts of the rrspiratory system to a turtle head, thats wear I got my idea from.

  1. Thank you, This is the best explanation for the difference between the pharynx, larynx, trachea and esophagus that I have ever come across.

  2. Yes I agree! I was rather confused before...but you've made it clearer! Thank you!
